2010 State Farm Classic Preview

by admin on June 7, 2010

state farm classicThe 2010 LPGA State Farm Classic starts this week – Thursday, June 9 through June 12, 2010.  The defeating champion is In-Kyung Kim and the event will be held at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Illinois.  Paula Creamer will be missing from the playing field since her injured thumb is still not 100%.  True LPGA fans will be missing Lorena Ochoa this week, I still can’t believe she retired in the middle of a golf season.  Here’s the list of the final field.

The field is still subject to change, but the final list includes the top 10 on the tour money list, 49 of the top 50 and 98 of the top 100. It also includes the top 10 on the latest Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

If you want to see the rest of the golfers at the State Farm Classic in 2010, you won’t be able to see them live on TV. The Golf Channel is putting the tournament on tape-delay.  I always feel when they put a LPGA event on tape delay it’s their way of saying it’s not important.

But according to Keith Allo, vice president of programming for the Golf Channel, a tournament that’s shown on a tape-delay basis actually may be seen by more television viewers than if it were shown live. “A lot of people will say, ‘If it’s not live, it’s not a big event,’ ” Allo said. “But the idea is to try to put the best stuff in a prime-time window. That’s what they try to do with the Olympics.  “You want to get as many people to see as many events as possible. We try to do that every week, and every week is different. We’ve worked with the LPGA tour on this, and we’re trying to maximize the exposure for them.”

The Golf Channel, in the first of a new 10- year agreement with the LPGA as the tour’s exclusive cable network, is making the State Farm Classic one of seven LPGA events to be shown entirely on a tape-delay basis this year.

Three other tournaments have a combination of live and taped coverage. But five of those seven all-tape-delay events have been or will be played overseas. They include LPGA tournaments in Thailand, Singapore, France and South Korea.

Hmmm I disagree!  How many PGA events are tape delayed this year?   Why not show the event LIVE and tape delayed — seems like the best solution to me!

Nicole Hage's "Girlie Golf" Photo Shoot

by admin on June 5, 2010

nicole hageLPGA golfer Nicole Hage recently did a photo shoot with her new tour sponsor SouthernLINC Wireless.  Super cute photos of Nicole, I especially like the photo in her alum Auburn University shirt!  Nicole will be playing next week at the LPGA State Farm Classic, June 10-13, 2010 at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, IL.

“SouthernLINC Wireless is pleased to increase its commitment to professional golf by supporting one of its most promising young players,” said Julie Pigott, vice president of marketing and customer support for SouthernLINC Wireless. “As an Auburn University alumna, Nicole Hage has strong ties to the state of Alabama, and we invite our SouthernLINC Wireless customers and community neighbors to come out and support her at the Mobile and Prattville LPGA Tour events.”

The 2010 season marks Hage’s first year on the LPGA Tour with Tournament Division Membership priority status in category No. 11, which she was granted following a ninth-place finish at Qualifying School in December 2009. [click to continue…]

Kirsten’s Awesome Quest Interview

Kirsten standing near the Whitney Oak tree on the ninth hole at her favorite course!

I’d like to introduce you to a truly “awesome golf girl” Kirsten Lewis who resides in Northern California.  I met Kirsten back in January 2010, and had the honor to golf with her recently for an EWGA event.  She’s a fantastic golfer, and an inspiring person to be around.  I learned a few tips and tricks from her in just one round of 9 holes.  That’s what supporting women’s golf does – it inspires you to achieve your golf goals, and introduces others into the sport.  Perfect timing – June is American Express Women’s Golf Month. Play Golf America. Bring a Friend and have fun during American Express Women’s Golf Month. June is a celebration of golf as a yearlong sport and recreation for women.  Here’s my interview with Kirsten:

What is Kirsten’s Awesome Quest?  When did you begin this quest and what is the inspiration behind it?
My awesome quest is a personal quest to become a top golf athlete (amateur) from just beginning in the sport 3 years ago.  It is my belief that people can accomplish so much more including their personal dreams…and through mental inspiration, much self development (huge self belief and belief in the power of human potential), solid training and a bit of work…I should be able to accomplish amazing things! Including my personal dream of becoming a champion athlete in this sport.  To me a champion has many meanings – one being playing against top amateurs and coming out strong.

My first goal is to become a single digit and then scratch golfer.  This will then bring me to the qualifying index for entering into amateur qualifiers for National Amateur championship Majors and State Championships.   Also, one of my BIG goals in sharing my quest and embarking on my quest is to inspire others to follow their dreams and just Go For It!! Francella wins HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010

by admin on May 31, 2010

HSBC GolfMeaghan Francella wins the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010 over Mariajo Uribe in a six-hole, sudden death playoff on May 30, 2010.  How frustrating for the LPGA golf fans  (and me too!) – the event wasn’t televised, and the only way to monitor the scores was to visit the HSBC website.  No scores were posted on the LPGA, PGA, or Golf Channel scoreboards.  It was almost like it didn’t happen?  Sure it was only a 2-day exhibition, but it’s still a LPGA event!!!  I don’t get it? What can I say I’m still bitter over why Lorena Ochoa’s retirement from golf was never televised or recorded either.  Grrrrrrrrr. (end of Rant).

Meaghan Francella proudly shows off her trophy after winning the HSBC.

Nice to see Mariajo Uribe make a great run at the HSBC tournament.  2010 is Mariajo’s rookie year on the tour – see below a few interview questions LPGA.com asked her after a tough loss: [click to continue…]

The day started with a shotgun start with a sea of pink, and for the fifth year in a row the event sold out!  The golf tournament, silent auction and raffle raised nearly $32,000 and the entire amount goes to The Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure, which benefits breast cancer screening, education, prevention and treatment programs.  One in seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.  Since 2006, MAMMARIES IN MOTION has raised over $150,000 in the fight against breast cancer.

Pink Out II Day at Colonial

by admin on May 29, 2010

pink out pgaThe second year for the PGA Tour’s ‘pink out’ in support of breast cancer was held at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial on Saturday, May 29, 2010.  Phil Mickelson missed the “Pink Out II Day” after posting a 3-over-par 73 on Friday and didn’t make the cut.  The special Pink Out Day was started in honor of Michelson’s wife who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Players, caddies and others at Colonial honored Amy and others in the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink attire.

“I’ll be wearing pink tomorrow in San Diego,” Mickelson said on Golf Channel. “I just played terrible,” Mickelson said. “It’s a pink out daygood barometer for me, knowing starting my U.S. Open run, which is here, I’ve got a lot of work to do.”

state.farmThe LPGA State Farm Classic 2010 is celebrating their 35th year on the tour and will be televised on June 10 – 13, 2010.  (Not all LPGA tournaments are televised these days, so it’s worth mentioning!)  With some sponsors leaving the tour in the past few years, it’s nice to see a true sponsor that stayed with the LPGA.  State Farm created a You Tube channel and interviewed some of the top past winners.

Annika Sorensen won the event in 2006.  They tracked her down on a snow slop in January to ask her about her favorite memories at the State Farm Classic: [click to continue…]

st.andrews

As my golf game continues to improve I’ve decided to started a “golf bucket list” of golf destinations I would love to visit and play internationally.  At the top of my list is of course is Scotland.  Visiting the birthplace of golf has become the must-visit pilgrimage for golfers along with visiting the most coveted Scottish course of them all: the Old Course in St. Andrews.  (Check out the live webcam from St. Andrews).  Also, the 2010 Ricoh Women’s British Open will be played in Scotland at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club this August – another outstanding reason for a visit!

Googling “Golf in Scotland” resulted in many interesting websites, especially the brewhaha with the proposed Trump International Golf Links course in Aberdeen, Scotland. Although permission was given in 2008 to Trump to build a five-star hotel, 1,200 homes and two international-standard golf courses, many local residents have opposed the planned resort from the start.  Seems that many locals are not keen on selling their homes to The Donald, no matter what the price is. (I can’t blame them!) You can read more articles about the controversy here from the BBC and one from The Huffington post here.

scotlandBack to “Golf in Scotland” – there are many websites about golf vacations, but I found this site “Your Golf Travel” to be a great resource!  They have discounted travel packages with a variety of options.  Besides traveling to Europe for a golf vacation, you can choose from just about anywhere in the world and book directly from their site.  Another destination I was thinking about was France, I’ve been to Paris before, but didn’t have time to check out the golf courses since it was my first trip there, and it was a very cold week and I was more interested in being a tourist and shopping rather than being on a golf course.  However, on my next trip to France, I’ll definitely check out the “Golf in France” page on the Your Golf Travel website and book a golf adventure in beautiful France!

So make your golf bucket list and plan your next European golf vacation!  FORE!

Only you can answer where your game is now.  If you’re not a 21 year old phenom, you can still learn to have an amazing golf career by attending golf school.

Rory McIlroy

In May 2010, McIlroy recorded his first PGA Tour win after shooting 62 in the final round of the Quail Hollow Championship.

Tiger’s golf career started at age 2 with a television appearance on the Mike Douglas show. Current international golf up and comer, Rory McIlroy, was swinging his stuff to television audiences by age 3. Are you a part of this golfing fraternity? Chances are you’re not, but that shouldn’t hold you back from pursuing a career in some aspect of the game of golf. All it takes is some passion, a good education, and learning about the industry.

How is your game at this point in your life? If you have gotten your scores down to scratch or maybe a stroke or two above or below, you may very well have what it takes to make it in the competitive game. Obviously you’ll need to learn consistency. Being able to compete with other professionals that are shooting at or below par on a regular basis is basically the cost of admission into this aspect of working as a pro golfer.

Perhaps you love to play the game but just aren’t at a handicap that would provide you with the potential to make a run at the flag? Not to worry. With quality instruction from a leading golf school you can learn from seasoned instructors. With adequate study and practice you could easily enjoy a golf career as a PGA professional instructor helping to improve the games of others.

And there are literally hundreds of other golfing opportunities that exist for those that might never become touring or teaching pros. If you happen to be of the entrepreneurial nature and are interested in running or owning a pro golf shop, you can make that happen. Simply learn all about the business at a golf school, and you’ll quickly find there are ample opportunities to invest in a shop of your own. [click to continue…]
